This is me performing a song that means a lot to me. I believe all songs should have meaning, so I wrote this song with that in mind.

Meaning Of Life

l B-7 l E-7 l F#7 l B-7 l
This morning was good, but then I woke up
It's a shame to know my tears can't fit in a cup
But I understand
Life goes on

l B-7 l E-7 l F#7 l B-7 l
Can't remember the last time I got down on my knees
But god if you're there I'm begging you please
Let me leave life
With the right regrets

l Dmaj7 l Amaj7 l B-7 l F#7 l
The constant in my life is that change is gonna come
All I have to think about, is at the end what I'll become
And I know, I know
That through all the years,
I'm gonna laugh through all my tears
And to me that is
The way to live life

l B-7 l E-7 l F#7 l B-7 l
They told me to be myself, but then they judged me
I'm here to say you know my name, not my story

l F#7 l C#-7 l D l E l
But I'm sorry if the middle of my sentence
Disrupts the beginning of yours
I guess I just don't play well with others

l Dmaj7 l Amaj7 l B-7 l F#7 l
The constant in my life is that change is gonna come
All I have to think about, is at the end what I'll become
And I know, I know
That through all the years,
I'm gonna laugh through all my tears
And to me that is
The way to live....

l D9 l D7b9 l C#-7(b5) l C#dim7 l
Life has no remote
You have to change it yourself
And while your at it, don't give a damn
About anybody else

l Dmaj7 l E-7 l B-7 l F#7 l
But there are those who love you
Those who really care
And those are the ones
That you should be there....

l B-7 l E-7 l F#7 l B-7 l
For life is not forever
Nor is any type of sadness
Still I hope that when I die
There'll be people asking 'why?'

l Dmaj7 l Amaj7 l B-7 l F#7 l
The constant in my life is that change is gonna come
All I have to think about, is at the end what I'll become
And I know, I know
That through all the years,
I'm gonna laugh through all my tears
And to me that is
The way to live life

l Dmaj7 l Amaj7 l
And one more thing,
If the ending isn't happy....

l B- l B-maj7 l B-7 l D l
The story isn't over

Song Analysis

I wrote this with a particular message in mind: It gets better. I've had my fair share of troubles throughout my life, but the lyrics in this song are what I thought during those times.
Being a musician, I thought I should come up with the music first. I wanted to find like a groove first because I thought the lyrics would just flow afterwards. So first I decided to write this song in a minor key because this is a pretty serious topic for me. Therefore, I thought the minor key would help emphasis that. However, when I reach the chorus I switch to the relative major key. I did this because I feel like the chorus needed a feeling of hope, and switching to the relative major was the best way to accomplish that.
Then, I decided to feature guitar as the main instrument in this song. I wanted this because I felt the tone of the guitar would really highlight the minor key. I also feel that the guitar makes the song more emotional, rather than me playing this song on piano.
After deciding those things I had to decide on the chords for the song. I didn't want to make the song too complicated, so for the most part I used 4 chords progressions. However, I change the chords at the second part of the second verse. I do this because I felt like putting a "mini-surprise" in the progression. This could symbolize the fact that life is full of surprises. I also use a slightly more complicated progression in the bridge. It's an 8 chords progression with a bunch of jazz chords (like D7b9, C#dim7, etc.). I did this because this song represents me, so I needed to put jazz chords in since I love jazz.
Finally, I came to the part that the casual listener actually hears and appreciates. In other words, I came to the lyrics and the melody. I didn't try to do too much with the melody. I figured that I would just do whatever flowed into my mind. That approach mostly worked, however I had to make a few changes. Throughout the song, a lot of choices between notes have to be made. Depending on what I was trying to say at a particular point, I had to pick either a major or minor tonality to create a happier or sadder feeling respectively.
To analyze my lyrics, I think I have to go line by line at some points because I literally have meaning in every line. That being said, I first tried to decide the most important things I wanted to say. Those lines went into the chorus. The line: "The constant in my life is that change is gonna come" was the most important line that I wanted to emphasis, so I made it the first line of the chorus. To me this line means it gets better. No matter how bad your doing, things don't stay that way forever. They even out. The second line in the chorus is also important. With that line, I was trying to say how you don't have to worry about if life gets better (because it does), so you should just worry and focus on is your goal for yourself in life. In the second part of the chorus, I start by repeating, "I know" twice. I do this to put emphasis on it. I wanted to make it a statement of the fact I'm going to "laugh through all my tears", which is what I say in the upcoming lines. I finish the chorus off with the statement "That is the way to live life." This quote sums up the rest of the chorus and what I was trying to say, which was how important these things are in a healthy lifestyle.
In the first verses, I talk about the "downs" in life. The first line, "The morning was good, but then I woke up," signifies that feeling when you aren't looking forward to the day at all. The next line just obviously means that a lot of tears have been shed. In that line, I also say its a "shame". According to the dictionary, shame means: a painful feeling caused by distress, so I used this word to highlight the pain that life can bring. I finish this stanza with the statement that "life goes on". I wanted to put that in the beginning of the song because that's basically what this song is about, so I thought putting in that idea early would help the listener understand the song easier.
In the first two lines of the next stanza, I talk about god. I'm not actually religious, but I put this in as a symbol. I wanted to represent how you should never be too proud to ask for help to your problems. After, I go on to say how I want to die with the right regrets. This is something that I've thought about for awhile. I feel like it's impossible to never regret anything in your life. Instead I only would hope that the regrets I do have don't change me as a person. Certain regrets might even motivate me to do better in the future. I think this is an important message, which is why I put it in the song.
The second verse mostly represents the hypocritical and "un-classy" society we live in today. Society is a big part of life, which I why I needed to put it in this song. In the first stanza of the second verse, I talk about how some people had told me to be myself, but judged after saying that. I feel this hypocrisy happens a lot in society. In retaliation of both this kind and other kinds of judgment, I put in the second line "You know my name, not my story", which, to put it simply, means to not judge a book by its cover.
Continuing on with a similar theme, this second stanza of the verse is a sarcastic way of stating a problem with interaction in society. I say: "Sorry if the middle of my sentence/ Disrupts the beginning of yours", which is a sarcastic and somewhat passive aggressive way of saying that a person interrupted you. I put this in because I feel like people often do you harm without realizing it. I go on to say that "I guess I don't play well with others," which is my way of saying that sometimes you should just take the blame for something you didn't do to avoid conflict.
Unlike some of the other parts of this song, the bridge is very straightforward. I just wanted to say two things. The first thing is life won't change unless you change it. I also wanted to say that you shouldn't care about anybody's opinion unless they truly care about you. To add on to that, I also say you should be there for the ones that are there for you.
The third and final verse is the shortest of the three verses. I just wanted to add some final notes that I thought are important to life. First, I wanted to say that no sadness lasts forever. I mean, there is always a light at the end of the tunnel if you wait for it. The other thing I wanted to say is: live life with purpose. In the song, I say: "I hope that wen I die/ There'll be people asking 'why?'" This ties into living with a purpose because I believe that if there are caring people at your funeral, you made an impact. Basically, I think the simplest purpose in life is to make a positive in the world.
To wrap it up, I say: "If the ending isn't happy/ The story isn't over," which pretty much sums up everything. In the rest of the song, I talk about sad things and how you have to just live through them because it won't be there forever and life goes on. All of that is pretty much summed up in the last two lines. I felt like it was a fitting coda for the song.
Overall, I don't think these thoughts will be the same for everyone, but I believe that this song represents my life well, and has a lot of things that I have thought about and learned through the years. It has meaning to me, and that's what every song should have.
